We had the pleasure of being part of the loving restoration of Thendara, the summer home of New York state senator John Raines, and one of Canandaigua Lake's historic gems— crafting custom kitchens and bars, vanities, built-ins, and architectural millwork, including molding, doors, and mahogany paneling and floors.
In 1900 New York state senator John Raines chose a peaceful spot to build his summer home—perched on a bluff overlooking Canandaigua Lake. The Seneca Indians called the place Thendara, which roughly translates to the “meeting place” or “rim of the forest.” Local builder Rhoda Hogan constructed Raines’s lavish Victorian summer, and landscape architect John Handrahan designed the grounds. The original 14-room house was completed in 1910, not soon after Raines own death in 1909, and included nine bedrooms, a billiard room, hot and cold running water, and a substantial boathouse with an open air-dancing floor[1]. Thendara as the home is known has graced the shores of Canandaigua Lake for over 100 years and in that time was a private residence, home to the Canandaigua Yacht Club, a public restaurant, and bed and breakfast. Once again a private residence Thendara taking its rightful place as one of the grand old homes on Canandaigua Lake.
We are excited to be a part of the loving restoration of this historic gem—crafting custom kitchens and bars, vanities, built-ins, and architectural millwork, including molding, doors, and mahogany paneling and floors.
